Scientific Notation Converter

This conversion calculator is used to convert a number in scientific notation, decimal notation and e notation to a normalized notation and engineering notation. It has been programmed to give quick and accurate results based on the input values. Enter a scientific, decimal or e notation in the respective text field. Press the ‘Convert’ button to initiate the conversion. The Conversion result is displayed in normalized notation and engineering notation.

Example

Convert 45 x 103 to normalized notation and engineering notation

Solution

Since this is a scientific notation, enter the whole value (45) in the first text field and the power (3) in the far right text field. Press the ‘Convert’ button to initiate the conversion. The result is displayed as;

Decimal notation: 45,000

E notation: 45e + 3

Normalized notation: 4.5

Engineering notation: 45

Use the same procedure when performing a new conversion to determine the corresponding results.

What is a scientific notation?

A scientific notation is also referred to as an exponential notation. It is a system that was developed to abbreviate numbers that have a huge number of decimal places or digits. It can also be defined as a short-hand method of expressing numbers.

For example, if you want to communicate the following number to several parties;

234,000,000,000,000

You can abbreviate the number using scientific notation to the following;

2.34 x 1014

This can also be expressed as 2.34E14 or 2.34e14.

Note that “e” or “E” simply stands for the “power of 10 exponents”.

A very small number can also be expressed in a scientific notation while addressing the interested parties.

For example, if the number you want to communicate is 0.0000000000234. Using the scientific notation, you can abbreviate the above decimal number to the following;

2.34 x 10-11

This can also be expressed as 2.34E-11 or 2.34e-11.

The scientific notation reduces the chances of eliminating a number in translation.
